The Outpost's 14th Anniversary

March 7th, 2014 was the first time I made a post on this blog. Hard to believe it's been 14 years (with a bit of a gap in posting) of sharing my hobby journey! I also want to thank those who read this blog. I hope the things I post are enjoyable to read and that the models are nice to look at.

My original goal was to create a place where I could share my projects, and to try and keep myself motivated to keep getting things done in the hobby. Since then, I've expanded to include story telling, with D&D recaps and Solo narrative campaigns.

It's also hard to believe the things that have changed in my life over 14 years! I've gotten married, had 2 kids, changed careers. Yet my passion for hobby and story telling have stayed the same. I wanted to take the opportunity in this post to look back at the blog and where some of my current projects are now.

Looking back, I've been very happy to share my painting progress and I feel I've grown with incorporating new techniques, new types of paints. Things like contrast/speed paints weren't really a thing when I started this blog and they have been a wonderful addition to my repertoire. I've also pushed myself to try out new techniques to me, such as edge highlighting and dry brushing.

I've also branched out from just Games Workshop's product eco zone and started to collect minis from a host of different companies and game systems, including some 3D printed minis. Back in 2018 I made my first leap into another company by getting my first Dropfleet models at that years Adepticon. I feel in love with a starship game and it minis and went all in on my favorite looking fleet, the PHR (Post Human Republic). The sleek look just reminded me so much of the Covenant from Halo, I was sold. Then I started reading the rule book and learning the lore and fell in love with the whole universe.

Later, near the end of COVID, the D&D group I had become a member of had begun designing and 3D printing our own characters for our campaigns. As the resident painter, I took up doing some of the paint jobs so I could continue to practice my new techniques and who doesn't love cool painted minis on the battlefield! And about 2-3 years ago, I picked up my first BattleTech minis. Having been a fan of many of the video games over the years, it was only natural I'd branch out into their game system as well.

More recently, I've gotten into solo gaming. Sitting on almost 25 years worth of Games Workshop product that is fully built and painted, I wanted to start getting more use out of it (as much as I enjoy going into my basement to enjoy looking at my collection). And with time constraints, I discovered solo gaming. It could be played at my pace, from home. Then seeing a video from Miniwargaming that highlighted the Five Parsecs from Home game system, which happened to be produced by Modiphius, who made the Star Trek Adventures game that I was now Game Mastering for, and I was sold. It had all the random rolling tables I wanted, a self generating game system, and it's battles were a similar size to Killteam. After getting the first book to start, I quickly learned that there were expansions and I started to collect all of those as well. I know have all three of the currently published books with the new Planetfall book on pre-order. I've had a lot of fun playing Five Parsecs and it has really helped give me something regular to publish. You can look forward to round 14 going up this coming Thursday.

Bridge Concept for my Star Trek solo adventure.

I think more of my content over the next bit will be narrative works in general. I am still working on writing up my first episode of my Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log. I have the episode worked out, it's just a case of deciding how I want to present the write-up and get it posted. I will also strive for weekly posts for Five Parsecs from Home for my Crimson Tide crew. Later this spring when the physical book arrives for Planetfall, I hope to begin doing a separate campaign for that as well. I may also revisit my idea for narrative posts about my Warhammer collection. As I am very close to 25 years collecting and many of the models I've used have developed stories from games played, as well as other back stories I've developed over the years.

But thank you all for coming to read my blog, and here's to even more hobby content!

Until next time!
